I love this place. They have so many options and everything is made to order. Everything I have ever ordered is fantastic! They have all sorts of options for Vegans too!

Lowly sandwich shop situated on Cherry St. just east of Eastern. 80+ different options of sandwiches, salads, and soups. A choice to keep any and all happy. Definitely gets busy during the lunch rush so call ahead or show up a little early unless you don't mind waiting a little bit for your sandwich. This place is a favorite neighborhood staple of mine. It's close, delicious, friendly, and it's a challenge to try and order a different item when they are all so good!

My experience here at this cafe was just ok. It wish the serving sizes were a bit more. I also felt a bit crowded. This place should be a bed and breakfast with different servers. The servers were snobby.

Out visiting Grand Rapids on a road trip, and hankered for a deli sandwich. Yelp gave me several suggestions, and Cherry Deli was the closest and open on Sundays. Stopped in and ordered a soup and sandwich- the beef barley soup and pastrami. Got chips and an orange cream soda to go along with it. They hit the spot after several hours of driving. The sandwich & soup was tasty, no doubt about it, and I had to take half of the sandwich home- it was that big. Nice little neighborhood deli, and one I would enjoy going back to if my travels ever take me back to Grand Rapids!

LOVE there sandwiches! A little on the pricy side but they have Gluten free Breads from Charlotte Bakery and that is awesome!! Every sandwhich I have had has been AMAZING! Way to many options but I like options! The chairs are not great but that is what gives the place a nice cozy feel. I would eat there more but paying $15 for a 1/2 sandwich and a drink is a bit pricy.

Was in here about a month ago with a friend. We came in around 11:30 am, and I'm not sure if they had just opened, but we were nearly ignored by the people working in there. There wasn't anyone else in the restaurant either. However, the food was GREAT, so it made everything so much better. I had a BLT and the pasta salad. Would definitely go back there.

    Very delicious sandwiches...enjoyed.

The selection is amazing. The cleanliness is horrible starting at the front door. No clean tables, no bottled water, recyclables overflowing and grime all over the place. And the hipsters that are working there could care less. Had to sit outside, there were less flies out there than inside. Yuck.

Excellent sandwiches! There are hundreds of sandwiches to choose from, and every sandwich I have tried (about 10 so far) have tasted excellent. A half sandwich is more than enough for me to eat. We were immediately greeted at the door and quickly received our food (approximately 10-15 minutes).

  • Julie G.

This would be a 5 if they were faster. Love the food quality and the variety on the menu but expect to wait a little while for your food for a deli.

Delicious every time! Wonderful, imaginative, large full menu with vegan, gluten free options, as well. My husband and I just love this neighborhood eatery. A favorite sandwich of mine is the Fish Ladder. The combination of tuna fish, lemon caper mayo, cheddar cheese, the perfect amount of onion, a slice of tomato all melted and melded together under a panini press is so good. Makes me hungry just writing this! Then, there is the Betty Ford..Incredibly delicious savory roast beef, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese on a grilled pretzel bun...complimented with a cup of rich, flavorful au jus. Perfection! Add a fresh brewed iced tea and a bag Kettle Brand potato chips. Five stars all around!

  • Katy C.

This is by far, the absolute slowest deli I have ever been to. Don't go during lunch expecting a quick sandwich! The average wait for my food any time I have gone is at least 20-25 minutes. The sandwiches are average.

Friday night visit. Easttown was hopping. Parking was a slight challenge. Not too tough. Restaurant was half filled. Glad seating wasn't a problem. Family ordered a turkey sandwich, ham sandwhich and spicy chicken sandwich. 4 out of 5 stars we felt. Pretty good meal, not a grandslam however. I'd say price was a little high for what we received. Bring the cost down a bit and I'd argue you got what you paid for. Skinny jeans and knit cap are a must. (at least for the workers)..

A decent sandwich place. The hipster vibe is cranked up to 11 in here, but you can't really hold that against a place when writing a review of the food. I will note that you might feel a bit out of place if you're over the age of 21 and/or don't own a stocking cap. The sandwich selection is good. I like that I can order vegan here if I so desire and can expect to get a reasonably good-tasting meal. My main beef with this (yes, pun intended) is that the sandwiches are very pricey for what you get. I would assume a vegan sandwich to either be cheaper or twice the size. I am including a photo of my sandwich: a grilled, seasoned tofu creation just under the size of a ball point pen with no cap. For $10.50, no less. I finally understand why the hipsters can wear skinny jeans and make them look like baggy pants... Still, not a bad place to go if you're in the area, want something healthy and are not overly famished. If you're hungrier and in a more carnivorous mood, I would recommend trying Schnitz's Deli

Cherry Deli is a cozy, less formal dining alternative to the breweries and sit down restaurants on the block. You can sit for awhile and eat one of the sandwiches, soups and salads they offer, or just get your food to-go. They offer a comfortable dining room, a plethora of sandwich options, and on my most recent visit - ambient guitar from a musician near the front counter. I happened to be working from home the particular day I stopped in and the environment was pleasant to get some work done while noshing on a side order of fruit. The sandwich and side options are always solid and I especially like their macaroni salad. Is it the very best deli sandwich I've ever had - no - but they have enough of a variety to keep me interested in trying new things each time I stop in.

  • Kerry M.

The food was ok. I didn't find many kid friendly options which stresses me out. The ordering system was slightly confusing. I had to ask for a fork twice for my salad, and eventually just sent someone else from my party to the counter to get it because I was so annoyed. Expensive for what you get, and spacey service. Wouldn't return.

Only been once, but we had a pretty good experience! Very hip atmosphere, nice, quick service, and tasty food. My biggest beef is that the portions are pretty small for the prices. We paid $36 for two whole sandwiches, each with chips, one bottled drink, and a cup of cheddar broccoli soup to share--and we still weren't full. (Mind you, I'm pretty petite lady and don't eat a lot lot.) Unfortunately, this could be a dealbreaker since we can get way more food at Schnitz for just $23. I liked this place a lot. But if you're budget conscious, steer clear.

  • Amy M.

Oh yeah, am I a fan! This place has great sandwiches and such a wide variety anyone can get something they would enjoy here. Be warned that the large is just more meat, it isn't a bigger size! I love the names of the sandwiches - after streets and neighborhoods in GR. The Paris is my fave!!! I very highly recommend this deli if you are looking for a good sandwich!

  • Carly T.

I have had a few bumps in the road here with long lines despite placing a pickup order and the occasional error in ordering, but the sandwiches are delicious and the staff does try to accommodate you in those events.

I ate here for the first and last time today. I like the parking and neighborhood better than the Schnitz Deli, but I doubt I'll ever go here again. The good: The corned beef was good, but not as good as Schnitz's in my opinion. The not so good: The beef soup was a salt bomb and no where near as good as a can of Progresso soup. Next, the bread that came to dip in the soup was so stale and salty it was unedible, and I eat like a St. Bernard. Finally, the thing that really ruined it for me was everyone there under 50 looked like they were auditioning for a made for TV movie on hipsters. Every guy in the place had grotesquely tight skinny jeans on, glasses with thick black frames and stocking caps, even though it was 46 degrees and sunny today. Even two employees making the food had these stupid stocking caps on. The only thing missing was a shrine to Chairman Mao. It's like anyone wearing khakis and a normal button down shirt is a freak and outcast in this place. That alone for me is reason to go to Schnitz over this joint. If I wanted to eat corned beef and pickles with a bunch of poseur freaks with pants so tight they look like they were painted on, I'd drive to Zingerman's in Ann Arbor. At least Zingerman's food is excellent. Never again.

Well, almost a year later and I finally made it back on Father's Day. The things I had mentioned before: the broken air conditioning and the outside seating appear to have been fixed. We sat outside on a beautiful sunny, yet cool day in the shade. Very nice, plus it was a Sunday so the traffic on Cherry street was not as busy as during the week. I really don't like inhaling car exhaust while eating. So on to the food. I got the 1/2 sandwich and cup of soup. #72 Gladstone: Falafel Cake, Caramelized Onions, Cheddar Cheese, Seasoned Tofu, Rosemary Thyme Mustard on a Jalapeño Cheddar Roll. The soup was the Cucumber Feta, a cold soup My wife got the salad and soup. Millennium Park: Romaine, Spring Mix, Red Onions, Carrots, Red Cabbage, Cucumbers, Cherry Tomatoes, & Croutons with cherry vinaigrette dressing. The soup was hot and sour. I thought my sandwich was very good. I'm glad I got the half sandwich. Their falafel is still creamy inside and a full portion would have been so messy as to require a knife and fork. Good, but the falafel at Pita Pit Stop are better. My cold soup was more like a salad dressing. In fact I used it as a dip for my sandwich, and my wife did not like the cherry vinaigrette, so she used some of this for her salad too. The problem with the vinaigrette? Too much vinegar and not enough cherry flavor. Other than that, she liked the salad. Very fresh and crunchy. But we would not order the hot and sour again. In fact when she took the lid off, we were sure they had given us the wrong one as it did not look like any hot and sour we had ever seen. They assured us that it was correct. She tasted a little red pepper--very little--I guess that was the hot, and tasted no sour at all. We still think they gave us the wrong soup. Anyway. I am sure we will be back because we did like it, but it did not live up to the rave reviews that others have given them.

Sandwiches GALORE, with many vegetarian & vegan options, GF bread - get it toasted! - and such artistry in the delicious creation of your samich, salad, or soup! Love living around the corner from this GR gem :-)

Hands down best sandwich shop in Grand Rapids. My favorite is the East Hills. That and they have the best white chicken chilli. Every time I go home it's a place I always make time for. If your looking for a quaint little place in GR to grab lunch or dinner this is the spot; stop looking.

Great selection of deli, for eaters of all preferences (vegetarian, vegan and carnivore alike). Soups are hit and miss. Try a sample before ordering a cup/bowl. Nice staff too.

  • Ben B.

Wow! Overwhelming amount of sandwiches. All named after streets around Grand Rapids. Me and my friends went once and the 5 of us got all diffrent sandwiches, all of them got rave reviews. We waited maybe 10 mins, which I thought was more then reasonable for this small shop who doesn't look like they're ever to busy. My coffee was nice and hot as well! Thanks!

An amazing specialty sandwich shop where you can find almost anything to your liking whether your a carnivore, omnivore, herbivore, or vegan. Probably have over 75 different types of sandwich that are handmade in the spot with panini options in many of them. It is always an adventure when ordering and don't get overwhelmed by the menu. Figure out what type meat you want or not and then go from there. Also their soups aren't too bad either.

  • Amy E.

Excellent place for lunch or dinner! They offer a huge menu of sandwiches and also have soups and salads. It is a smaller place, and it gets very busy around lunch time, so calling ahead is a good idea. They staff are very friendly and are great with recommendations and offering new ways to switch up your favorite sandwich. Very generous portions, a whole sandwich just means more filler, which is great for leftover.

  • EJ P.

Lunch trip and it was great. Awesome selection of specialty sandwiches and homemade soups. Had the seafood gumbo and a hot roast beef sandwich. Both were good and plenty to eat. The staff was friendly and laid back. The only negative is with the layout of the dining room, people were lined up close to the tables and the front door was very drafty. Had to eat with a coat on....other than that it is recommended.

I had lunch here with local friends while visiting for ArtPrize. Upon walking in, I was amazed and overwhelmed by the choices. As a vegetarian, it was refreshing to see numerous sandwich options, not a common sight at delis. I went with the Gladstone, choosing the half sandwich with soup combo. My sandwich was very good and the bread was delicious (I loved the variety of breads they offer), my only complaint is it could have used a bit more flavor/spices, perhaps a flavorful dressing or sauce. It was just a bit bland and since it had tofu, which is a bland ingredient by itself, they could have upped the spice a bit. I was confused as to why I received a whole sandwich even though I ordered a half until I read other Yelp reviews, but it was more than enough for lunch. I ended up taking the other half home with me. The soup I chose was the vegan potato curry, which was really good, however could have been taken to the next level with some heat and maybe a touch more salt. The flavor was there but just needed a little something extra. Reading other reviews, it seems like this is a common occurrence. I enjoyed the selection of bottled sodas and I loved getting toasted bread with my soup. It was busy while we were there, with every table full and a line to order, but we got our food in less than 10 minutes.

So we went again for lunch and I really wasn't too impressed. I had a better sandwich this time though. I really like pastrami so I thought I'd give it another try, but it is not pastrami like I know. The texture was still just odd. The fresh mozzarella and other toppings were top notch though. The bread was still greasy too. I have a feeling this place is good, and I won't give up on it just yet. I just hope they wow me soon.

What an impeccable neighborhood gem! My coworkers and I discovered this place while we were working nearby and it was so good we visited 2 days in a row for lunch. They have so many sandwich options and they are all great. The portions are quite large so don't even think of ordering a full sandwich here. My favorites were the East Hills and Orchard. They even have some unique bottled sodas.

  • Stephanie L.

My friends and I go here about once per month for lunch. The sandwiches and soups are awesome and they have a HUGE menu. You could try something new every time you go. The "half" sandwiches are actually whole sandwiches in any normal person's head. The "whole" sandwiches come on larger pieces of bread and are more like 2 sandwiches. My favorite is #35 Charles (chicken salad with candied walnuts and dried cherries) and my friend Abby always gets the white chicken chili.

I'm not going to go into great detail with Cherry Deli. I'll let the stars speak for themselves. I will say that the sandwiches are bomb. Which is a term of endearment I don't use often because it sounds stupid but its the best i got. I have had two I believe they were both named after a president, you know which one I am talking about. Or perhaps one a president and the other was a direction, which I expect you to know. Any how, both very good. Everything was fresh and prepared well. I am a fountain drink snob, if there can be such a thing and they have those there. I suggest choosing one of the plethora of bottled beverages instead, I just always disappoint myself or else I would have a legitimate suggestion regarding bottled beverages. My lady wanted the strawberry lemonade, GONE. Must be good or a popular impulse purchase. She had an olive tapenade sandwich on some kind of tomato roll/bread whatever that looked great. Id let you know how it was but olives make me barf. She loved it. Well that was longer than I wanted to go but the bottom line is Cherry Deli will make love to your taste buds. Worth the almost obscene amount of money you have to spend. Side note, half a sandwich is enough, don't be a fatty. You will find that you will throwing away 30% of that deliciously expensive sammy. Get half, HALF, a sammy a bag of chips and a drink. Its still around $9 but well rounded and extremely filling. No 5 star because the set up is disjointed and service is a bit slow. They kind of act like you should be amusing them when you give your order. Seriously thought the girl was going to fall asleep half way through my order. Yawning? I'm not Ben Stein, give me some eye contact for gods sake. Not a realistic gripe, I'm just saying that's how I felt. Clearly it didn't hurt their rating that bad. Still it's a business, I am helping to pay your wage, act like you want my order. Hit this place up for the sandwich of your dreams.

Either you'll find a sandwich here that you love, or you don't like sandwiches. There are dozens and dozens of hand-built, artisan-crafted sandwiches on the menu here, in addition to a variety of flavorful soups and salads. The deli sides of hummus and spreads are just as wonderful. As others have noted, there's a great selection of vegetarian options. Despite loving the variety, I almost always order a Gerald Ford -- it's as close to sandwich perfection as exists. The ingredients used here are high quality, but many are food service grade. That's not a big knock, just a note that not everything here is naturally- or locally-sourced. Service can be a bit slow for a sandwich shop, especially during busy times. Typically it takes five to ten minutes for sandwiches and salads to be assembled, but when you taste them, you'll appreciate the wait. The one drawback are the prices: Above $7 for a half-sandwich, and approaching $10 for a full. Worth it? Absolutely. But, at these prices, I don't eat here nearly as often as I might. You get what you pay for, but you're paying a lot.

This place was quite good! The sandwiches are big and you get your monies worth. The stop itself is small, but comfortable and clean. The staff were very friendly and patient as there is a huge list of sandwiches to decide from. I'll be back!

This place has something for everyone, including a full vegetarian menu. I love the "localness" of it, with all the sandwiches named for streets in the area. Little things like that get me back here.

I love this place. I eat here all the time. They staff is awesome and the owner is super nice. They have a huge variety of sandwiches, and as a vegetarian, I like that they have lots of non- meat choices. It's a little more expensive, but completely worth it. They also do catering, which is fantastic. They catered my mom's wedding reception and the food was amazing. Check out their website for the menu.

I have been going to Cherry since they opened and have yet to be diisappointed. I have tried everything from vegetarian sandwiches to standard far like clubs and my 3 favorites tend to be the Hollister, South Hill, and Hawthorne. If a sandwich doesnt suit your mood then try the MLK Park Salad with cup of soup. You can't miss on more of their soups but the Butternut Squash Bisque is brilliant!

Dropped in after touring the Meyer May house & was immediately drooling over their expansive menu. I had a salad & a sandwich and was blown away. Simple well done food.

These are possibly the best sandwiches I've had in Grand Rapids. They have almost a dozen chalkboards hanging inside with the sandwiches and their corresponding number - a huge offering which is guaranteed to have something for just about everyone. A bit of education, however: the prices are listed as "half" and "whole" - that is not a half or whole sandwich, it corresponds to the amount of filling you want on your sandwich. They are very generous with their meat and cheese, though, and I have never needed to order a whole sandwich.

  • Nevada C.

Good enough sandwiches, probably on par with the Schnitz Deli. The main problem I have with this place is the selection. People seem to rave about the fact that they have 55+ sandwiches, but I think this is actually a bad thing for a couple reasons. first, such a large selection means that they have to carry a much larger inventory of goods, goods that may not be used frequently. In my mind this brings into question freshness of products. however, I will admit I have not experienced problems with freshness. A second issue is that such a large selection makes it difficult to choose. I do not believe that people benefit from larger selections. I think people benefit from a restaurant or deli telling patrons about the 10 to 15 dishes they are best at producing. 55+ selections distracts from those quality sandwiches that they make. Overall this is a good place to eat, not my favorite but worth a trip.

  • Scott H.

Cherry Deli has something for everyone. With over 40 sandwiches to choose from not too much the large selection of soups and salads. I have eaten here once and it was delicious. The #40 Paris is turkey, guac, bacon, lettuce, and tomato on a pita. It was awesome and I ordered the "half" which was plenty. They have outdoor and indoor seating which is great for nice days. They give Schnitz are run for their money.

  • Lisa S.

Love. This. Place. The sandwiches are great. There are lots and lots of options, a great many of them veggie, and the people who work there are always willing to give a recommendation or do a substitution. They have a few tables inside and out, which are perfectly fine, but in the summer I'd suggest taking your sandwich to the park for a picnic.

  • Lisa P.

Like their 4th Street Deli, the Cherry Deli has a huge high quality menu. Everything, quite simply, has been great! And if you need catering for a party this is your place!

Best Deli in GR (Sorry Schnitz, I love you too).

  • Tim L.

Best deli in grand rapids. I love Schnitz's for ambiance but this place takes the cake for selection and originality. With 55 different sandwich's named after grand rapids streets, all fresh and made per your request. I eat here 1-2 times per week. Superb! Plus it is open for dinner and on Sundays :)

Coming home after a wonderful weekend in Traverse City, we stopped at cherry deli for lunch. The amount of sandwiches are unbelievable! They have a beef sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, turkey, veggie, vegan, soups, and salads. The sandwich combinations were wow! I had the Paris Sandwich! Turkey sandwich on Pita with wonderful fix ins! Dan had the Chicken Cajun sandwich where I can't even remember the ingredients in the sandwich. You will get overwhelmed looking at the boards so take a deep breath! The veggie/vegan are on the left side. Salads are above the register, soup on the counter, and the meat selections are on the right side. There are lots of drink selections...even boxed water? I learned the half and whole really is how much meat/filling is in the sandwich not a "half" a sandwich. I wish there was a Cherry Deli in Chicago because I could then taste 54 more sandwiches.

    (4)
  • M T D.

Do yourself a favor; order the half. I'm not 100% sure what a "whole" entails, but judging by the "half" it must use an entire loaf of bread. Sandwiches are very tasty, and there are over 100 choices with some very interesting combinations. Just a tad on the high side of reasonable compared to other delis in town, but again you get a lot of food and its well worth the extra dollar fifty.

  • Scott S.

Great fresh sandwiches with a good crunchy dill pickle. Nice, helpful and accommodating staff. The menu selection is certainly daunting with so many choices. Although I'm not vegetarian, I really enjoy some of the vegetarian options. The half sandwich is the way to go unless you are extremely hungry.

I love their vegetarian selection of sandwiches, especially ones with portabella mushrooms. This is one of the few places that I recommend to friends/family in all of Grand Rapids.

The sandwiches, soups and everything else they produce is super yummy. The staff are kind, fun and love what they do - it shows. So glad we found this spot - we now eat here at least once a week.
